## Knowing something happened does not tell you which shipment it touches

- **Stressed route**: An incident moves lead times and costs far from where it happens.
- **Shared node**: A port or strait concentrates flows that looked independent.
- **Reacting without margin**: Rerouting cargo already in transit multiplies cost and coordination.

## Your perimeter

- Routes
- Shipments
- Deliveries
- Stock

## From the carrier’s notice to the container you expect

Maersk announces diversions amid Red Sea disruption (Maersk advisories · from December 2023)

- Services sail around the Cape of Good Hope (Routes and lead times depend on each service)
- Shipments at a hypothetical distributor (Hypothetical company's flows · route to verify)

What to check:

- Route and status of each shipment
- Stock and delivery commitments

## Red Sea: ten more days at sea and seven times the freight

From December 2023 carriers diverted Asia–Europe services around the Cape of Good Hope. Rates and lead times moved within weeks, and European plants stopped for missing parts. Nearly three years on, the return to Suez is still partial.

### What finding out late cost

- +10 days average extra voyage via the Cape of Good Hope ([IMF · Mar 2024](https://www.imf.org/en/Blogs/Articles/2024/03/07/Red-Sea-Attacks-Disrupt-Global-Trade))
- ×7 Shanghai–Rotterdam container rate: $1,171 (Nov 2023) → $8,267 (Jul 2024) per FEU ([Drewry WCI via Hellenic Shipping News](https://www.hellenicshippingnews.com/?p=1048591))
- 2 weeks most of Tesla's Berlin production stopped for lack of parts ([Quartz · Jan 2024](https://qz.com/tesla-puts-german-factory-production-on-hold-as-red-sea-1851161955))

### From day 0 to where it hurt

- Day 0 · mid-Dec 2023: Carriers announce diversions around the Cape of Good Hope.
- Day ~20 · 4 Jan 2024: Shanghai–Rotterdam rate +115% in a single week.
- Day ~30 · mid-Jan: Suzuki in Hungary, Volvo in Belgium and four Michelin plants in Spain pause production.
- Day ~45 · 29 Jan: Tesla stops most of its Berlin plant for two weeks.
- Sep 2026: Maersk moves some services back to Suez, conditional on no new escalation.
